Urban Microhabitats

As a small scale investigation of the struggling biodiversity of our cities, this ongoing art project already spanns over more than a decade. Gathering moving images and photographic material from around the world ”Urban Microhabitats” by Swedish artist Oscar Furbacken is an invitation to explore the marginalized patches of nature struggling to find a niche in the expanding cities of today.

Furbacken recently researched and performed new shoots in:

Tokyo, Japan (nov 2022)

New York City, USA (June 2022)

Paris, France (april 2022)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Nature has been suffering great losses ever since industrialization and the planetary systems already seem close to a tipping point as conflicts and rising temperatures create waves of migration. As we are witnessing the largest and fastest urban expansion in human history we cannot afford to loose track of the crucial need for green and sustainable living environments.

To secure the overall health of our urban populations scientists now point out the overlooked key role of biodiversity in generating ecosystem services such as clean air, drinking water and food. And as the UN-representative Elizabeth Mrema stresses, even ”climate change depends on biodiversity as part of the solution”.

In many of our cities wild nature is strongly marginalized and except for a few parks, will only be found on a very small scale. Unfortunately most of us seldom perceive the mosses, insects or fungi that surround us, and many of their complex interactions are yet to be discovered even by scientists.

By shedding light upon the fascinating mysteries of such microcosms Furbacken's project ”Urban Microhabitats” challenges us to reflect upon what it could mean for humanity to actually coexist with nature in a common aim towards a sustainable future.
